Step I: Initial Acquaintance

41 Then were complaining the Jews concerning him, because he said: "I AM (Gr - ego eimi) the bread, the having come out of the heaven one," 42 and they were saying: "Is not this one Jesus, the son of Joseph, of whom we know the father and the mother? Now, how is he saying that "out of the heaven I have come down?"

43 Jesus answered and said to them: "Do not mutter/complain with/among one another! 44 No one is able to come (aor. act. infin.) toward me unless/if not the father, the one who has sent me, might draw him, and I will raise him in/on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets: 'And all will be taught of (by?) God. [perhaps: students/learners of God?]' Everyone who has heard from the father and who has learned, is coming toward me. 46 Not that someone has seen the father, if not/except the one who is from God, this one has seen the father. 47 Truly, truly, I am saying to you, the one who believes is having eternal life. 48 I AM (Gr - ego eimi) the bread of the life. 49 The fathers/ancestors of you (pl.) ate in the wilderness the manna and they died. 50 This is the bread, the one coming down out of the heaven, in order that someone from it might eat and might not die. 51 I Am (Gr - ego eimi) the bread, the living one, the one having come down out of the heaven. If some someone eats from this bread, s/he will [definitely] live (a conditional, future more vivid) forever, but also the bread is the flesh of me, which I will give in behalf of the life of the world."
