(FS) B. TEXTUAL CRITICISM

(from Bruce Metzger, A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament, p. 88)

v. 2 Gr. "Polloi akountes" --- support for anarthRous use of "polloi" is very strong. The aorist tense of the participle could be a "pedantic refinement" by copyists of the Markan usage of a tense denoting continuous action.

v. 3 Gr. "...tekton...o ouios..." --- All uncials, many minuscules, and important early versions of Mark read, "Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary...?" Some later versions objected to calling Jesus a carpenter, and some other witnesses bring the text in line with Matthew 13:55 to read "Is this not the SON OF THE carpenter, the son of Mary?" The Palestinian Syriac simply omits "o tekton."
